About The Event
We celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, and his gift of the resurrection for us NOW. The service is called ‘The Easter Vigil’. We meet in the dark church and we trace the message of redemption from the dark of Good Friday, when all seemed lost….to the glorious resurrection of Jesus, when his eternal light shone in the darkness: we as baptised Christians share in his light. The service is in four parts:
1) The service of light – Outside, a fire is lit and from that the new Easter Candle is lit. The candle is then carried into the church and we all light our individual candles from that one light symbolising our receiving of the new light and life of resurrection from the Risen Christ.
2) A extended Bible service – recalling the promises of God in scripture to redeem his people. After the last reading the bells ring once more as we sing ‘The Gloria’ proclaiming the glorious victory of Christ.
3) A baptismal Liturgy – this was the time in the early church when people were baptised. We all renew our own Baptism promises. To remind us of our own Baptism we are sprinkled with holy water.
4) The first Eucharist of Easter We mark how Jesus feeds us with himself and his resurrection life in Holy Communion. It was at ‘Breaking of Bread’ that some of the earliest disciples first recognised Jesus after his resurrection (Luke 24:30).
